Education of persons with disabilities

Government School for Speech and Hearing Impaired, Baburhat, Chandpur

The Department of Social Welfare, Ministry of Social Welfare, is running this specialized school in Mathkhola, Baburhat area of Chandpur district for hearing, education and training for the hearing impaired. In all these schools students are taught sign language as well as general education.

Service recipient

  • Speech-impaired children aged 6 to 18 years.

Service  delivery  system  ( in short )

Interested parents have to submit the application along with the headmaster of the school for hearing-impaired in the prescribed form. Students with hearing disabilities are selected through a meeting of the Admission Committee after preparing the list of applications received by the concerned headmaster. In addition to education, vocational training is provided to these disabled students with the aim of developing them as skilled human resources including maintenance.

  • Final approval by the admission committee and admission to the school.

  • Application for student admission by parents in the prescribed form for admission of children in January every year;

  • Any assistance in improving the quality of education of students with disabilities;
  • Assist in the rehabilitation of students with disabilities financially, through the provision of employment or the provision of information;

Integrated Visually Impaired Education:

 

Like other welfare states of the world, the Government of Bangladesh is implementing comprehensive and multifaceted programs through the Ministry of Social Welfare and the Department of Social Services for the welfare and development of the destitute, neglected, backward, poor, orphans, disabled and backward people of the country. As a backward part, the present government is giving special importance to persons with disabilities. A part of this disabled population is visually impaired. 

 

Integrated visually impaired education program for visually impaired students was started in 1984. In order to provide education to the visually impaired children and to enable them to study with the visually impaired students in local schools under special management and adapt to their own environment and conditions instead of the relatively expensive institutional programs, the Department of Social Services, Government Deaf and Hearing Impaired School, Chandpur The center has been launched inside. It has 10 seats. Integrated visually impaired education activities and educational activities in schools from first class to SSC are being established in the society through feeding, education, training, treatment, recreation and rehabilitation of visually impaired students. The following services are provided by these organizations:

 

  • Providing formal education to visually impaired students in conjunction with general students;
  • Arranging teaching through Braille method;
  • Supply of free Braille books and other teaching aids;
  • Providing hostel facilities including accommodation for visually impaired students; And
  • Rehabilitation of visually impaired students.

 

In 1974, the visually impaired were linked to a variety of schools with the aim of providing access to education to visually impaired children and enabling them to study under special management with local students at local schools and adapt to their own environment and conditions instead of being a relatively costly institutional program. Integrated education for children with visual impairments is introduced. In each activity, visually impaired children are taught in Braille under the supervision of a specially trained 'resource teacher'. The number of seats in each center is 10.

Service delivery system  in short )

Interested parents have to submit the application along with the resource teacher / deputy director in the prescribed form. The concerned resource teacher prepares the list of applications received and selects the visually impaired students through the meeting of the admission committee. Admission is then completed by notifying the applicant. Admitted children receive education in Braille with the general students at the designated educational institution and the resource teacher supervises the teaching. All expenses related to accommodation, food and medical care for the admitted visually impaired students are borne by the Department of Social Services.
